The Question Nobody Prepares You For
For decades, we are taught to save: contribute to retirement accounts, invest consistently, avoid unnecessary debt, and allow compounding to do its work. What receives far less attention is what happens when the saving years end.
The paycheck stops. You may have accumulated enough to retire comfortably, yet spending that money can feel surprisingly difficult. After thirty or forty years of building, you are suddenly asked to do the one thing you trained yourself not to do: begin drawing it down.
That creates two very different fears. The first is the one everyone names: how much can I spend without running out of money? The second is asked far less often: am I being so careful that I am failing to enjoy the years I spent decades preparing for?
Both fears are real.
